In South Africa, our public holidays, once markers of profound struggle and hard-won victory, have been diluted into little more than welcome breaks from the daily grind. The historical significance has been bleached out, replaced by the generic glow of a day off.
Perhaps it's time we reclaimed them. Not by shunning the braai or the prayer, but by infusing them with the very meaning they were meant to celebrate. To remember, to discuss, to educate, and to ensure that these days are more than just a welcome pause, but a powerful reminder of where we come from, and the price that was paid for the very freedoms we now so casually enjoy.
