The Nature of Outgrowing Others: Why Growth Turns You Into A Stranger

By MoAfrika Skotch Ntilane — 23 November 2025

Introduction: When Your Mind Stops Fitting Into Old Rooms

I have always been a deep thinker. Even as a child I could feel my mind chewing on things other kids never noticed. But the world teaches you early to dim your light. So I learned to shrink. To act ordinary. To pretend I did not think too much.

But adulthood has no patience for pretending. Somewhere along the journey, that dimming switch finally broke. My intelligence stopped being something I could tuck away. And with that elephant came a strange and painful realisation: I had outgrown most of the people I grew up around.

The Moment You Realise You Are Changing

The shift often begins quietly. One day you look around and realise the conversations you used to enjoy now feel like homework. People you once admired now feel stuck in loops.

That is when you discover that outgrowing others is not a gentle process. It is a dangerous transition. You start shedding old beliefs, old friendships, old ways of thinking. It is like removing a shell you have lived in for years.

The Final Realisation

Outgrowing others is not the danger. Staying small for their comfort is. The real threat is betraying your potential just to maintain a fake sense of belonging. Growth asks for courage. It demands honesty. It insists on authenticity.

If outgrowing others is the price of becoming myself, then it is a price I am willing to pay. Gladly.
