You’ve heard it before: a prophet is never recognized in his own land. Or, as some say, a doctor heals another village before anyone praises him at home. It’s the same story in every Black neighborhood, every family, every set of friends you think you can count on. The closer they are, the slower the applause.
You launch a project, a small business, a creative venture... And who notices first? A stranger. Some random person online, scrolling past life like it’s TikTok, drops a heart or a like. Maybe they buy your product. Meanwhile, your friends, your cousins, your “supportive” family… silence.
Why does this happen?
Envy hides in plain sight. The brutal truth: humans are programmed for comparison. And comparison breeds hesitation. When it’s someone close, it’s personal. You don’t just succeed, you force others to confront their own choices, their own comfort zones, their own unrealized potential. That can be terrifying for them.
The Beauty of Self-Validation
The greatest gift of this realization is self-validation. You learn to clap your own hands, pour your own wine, and celebrate your own milestones. You no longer wait for family approval. The mirror becomes your first audience.
Sometimes, the village is strangers. And those strangers can become the family you always needed.
