The Ghost in the Machine: Battling Impostor Syndrome

By MoAfrika Skotch Ntilane — 18 August 2025

There’s a ghost that haunts the tech world. It doesn’t rattle chains or flicker lights. It whispers. It tells you that you’re a fraud, that your successes are flukes, and that any moment now, you’ll be exposed as the unqualified hack you truly are. This ghost is Impostor Syndrome, and from the bustling streets of Soweto to the polished corridors of Silicon Valley, it’s a tax on ambition that everyone seems to pay.

My journey into code wasn't paved with Ivy League degrees or coding bootcamps. It was forged in the flickering light of a screen during load-shedding, pieced together from YouTube tutorials and borrowed data. Every line of code felt like an act of defiance against a world that didn’t expect me to be there. And with every small victory, the ghost’s whisper grew louder, 'You don't belong here.'

We exorcise this ghost not by becoming perfect, but by embracing our imperfect journey. By understanding that our unique perspectives, our 'kasi logic,' our resilience, our unconventional paths, are not liabilities. They are our greatest strengths. They are the very things that make our contribution to the machine invaluable.
